  How UPVC Doors operate

UPVC doors are operated by lifting up the handle to engage the locking points then turning the key to deadlock the door. A multi-point locking system is most commonly used as a uPVC door lock but are now being used on newer high security composite doors, which can offer you maximum security as well as peace of mind. There are also manufacturers that now make auto engaging mechanisms where as soon as the door is closed, the hooks engage.

The locking mechanism inside the door can have different styles of locking features I.e. Roller Cams / Mushroom Cams, Shoot Bolts, Hook Bolts and Dead Bolts. There are many different manufacturers & types of lock & a lot of the older ones have been discontinued. If the lock is discontinued we have a lot of experience in finding you the nearest replacement.

   UPVC Door lock failure

Dropped door
It is very common for UPVC doors to drop, therefore the alignment is out for locking points with the keeps. It will usually make the door difficult to open, but sometimes even the slightest misalignment will mess up the locks! Modern UPVC doors are designed to be fully adjustable so this is usually quick to fix.
Faulty Euro Cylinder
If the key cylinder has failed then our locksmiths can easily replace this part, providing new keys without the need to replace the full mechanism. This will help keep the cost to a minimum.
Faulty mechanism
If the full length mechanism is faulty, in certain circumstances it is possible to only replace the “Gearbox” (centre lockcase). This keeps the job cost to a minimum. Replacing full mechanisms can be expensive, but in certain scenarios it is unavoidable.

The euro cylinder inside the mechanism

The cylinder is what drives the locking mechanism. More often than not it is the cylinder that will fail first. There are things to consider if you are looking to replace the cylinder due to loss of keys, enhancing your current security solution or failure.

Anti Snap Euro cylinders

We always advise installing anti-snap locks as this will stop the easiest form of burglary.
Snapping is a burglary technique which involves snapping a particular type of lock cylinder in two by applying the right amount of force and removing the outside part to expose the locking mechanism. Once the locking mechanism is exposed, it’s open to tampering which allows the door to be unlocked using simple household tools.
